About

The 5th Ward Islamic Center for Human Development is both a religious and social center serving the historic Fifth Ward. It was founded in 2018 by members who grew up in Fifth Ward. This underprivileged area has suffered from unemployment, incarceration, drugs and other social maladies. The Muslims of the 5th WIC want to help restore it.

2. WHAT SERVICES DOES THE CENTER PROVIDE?

•Self-Help Meetings: Alcoholics Anonymous, Anger Management,  and Cocaine Anonymous meetings are offered to the public weekly. The goal is to prevent suffering in silence by giving people someone and somewhere to turn to.

•Meals: Cooked meals are provided on Sundays. We plan to increase meals as the center grows.

•Religious And Spiritual Education: Islamic educators offer khutbahs (sermons) and ta`leems (learning sessions) on several aspects of religion and spiritual development. We focus on making the education relevant, action-provoking, and able to reach people at whatever stage they’re in. We also stream education on Facebook.

3. IS THE CENTER ONLY FOR THE MUSLIMS?
No. It is a center for human development, so we serve people from different backgrounds also. Concern for the condition of all people is a fundamental Islamic value.

4. HOW DO YOU SIGN UP?
No sign up needed. Just show up. Free self-help meetings are open to the public. Ta`leems and jum`ah services are also open, and we welcome people from other belief backgrounds to come view the service. We respect others’ beliefs, and when visiting, we ask visitors to respect ours too.

5. WHAT IF I’M INTERESTED IN ISLAM?
Whether you are inspired to become Muslim, you’re just interested in increasing your understanding, or you want to clarify things you’ve heard, we want to help. Attend Jum`ah services on Fridays and tal`eems on Saturdays and Sundays. Different educators teach a variety of Islamic and social
topics. Come get a free Qur’an and literature. Speak with one of our Imams (leaders) or members.

6. HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
Since we’re fairly new and growing, we can always use donations of packaged food to share, items from businesses, equipment for our kitchen, as well as monetary donations to help us expand. Call us if you or your organization have goods or services you’d like to share.
